Ramanathi River and Dam - Tirunelveli

         The Ramanathi River supplies water to the Tenkasi district.  The river Ramanathi plays an important role in the scenic Tenkasi district.  This river is the main reason for the presence of many green fields in the Tenkasi district.  In Tenkasi, the river Ramanathi flows through many villages like Alwarkurichi, Ravanasamudram, and Pottalputhur.

        The Ramanathi River originates in the Western Ghats and flows through the Tenkasi district in Tamil Nadu.  It originated from a height of 5150 feet and flows through the forest for about 7 km then it reaches the plain area.  It then joins the Kadanandi River at south Ambur the Ramanathi River.  Due to the high water level in the river throughout the year, it was decided to build a dam(Ramanathi Dam) across the river to prevent the risk of floods and to meet the need of Tamil Nadu.

Ramanathi Dam

        It was planned to build a Ramanathi dam across the river Ramanathi exactly in Melakadaiyam village in Ambasamudram taluk of Tirunelveli district.  The river Ramanathi is the main source of water for this dam.  It was decided to build during the Kamaraj era and the dam was completed during the Karunanidhi period.  The dam was completed in 1974, many years after its inception.  This dam is about 839 meters long and is built of stones.  This dam can hold water from 84 feet to 152 Mcft capacity.

        Ramanathi dam has 7 anicuts and a reservoir of 4.3 million cubic meters.  The water from this reservoir irrigates 20.23 sq km of irrigated lands.  Ramanathi dam is very close to the Gadana Nathi dam since the two rivers, Gadananathi and Ramanathi are flowing nearby near.
