According to Hindu mythology

One of the Hindu gods, Indra, the king of the heavenly gods, killed the demon Duvastha, the son of Sukracharya, the guru of the asuras who were penitent in search of higher powers against the gods.  Indra was attacked by Brahma Dosa for killing a Brahmin.  After going around many places to get rid of that sin, he repented and finally came to Agasthiyar Falls in Papanasam and repented and got rid of his sin.

According to another Hindu legend, a sage named Urosamar floated flowers in the river.  The first flower reached the shore at Agasthiyar Falls.  He built a temple to Lord Shiva at that place and was called Papanasar.

Marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvathi

According to another mythology, the divine marriage of the Hindu gods Shiva and Parvati took place at Kailash, the abode of Shiva.  All the gods were present at his wedding to such an extent that the entire Kailash was so full that no one could enter there anymore.  Thus Sage Agasthiya, the greatest devotee of Shiva, could not see their wedding ceremony.

Then Sage Agastya prayed fervently. Delighted at his prayers, Lord Shiva and Lord Parvathi appeared to them(Sage Agastya and his wife) in marriage attire.  Lord Shiva changed the place where he appeared to be his abode and then he was called Papanasanathar in that place.  Also, the nearest waterfall is called Agasthiyar Falls.
