All the people of Tamil Nadu come to Papanasam to seek forgiveness for their sins and bathe in the waterfalls there. All the people of Tamil Nadu see Papanasam as a sacred source.  The dam in such a town is the Papanasam Dam.  This Papanasam Dam is also known as the Karaiyar Dam.  Papanasam Dam is a scenic spot located at a distance of 49 km from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu.  It is a large dam and one of the major dams in the Tirunelveli district.

Papanasam Dam was built in 1942 by the British and is located in Papanasam, Tirunelveli.  Papanasam Dam is also known as the Tamiraparani Dam.  Papanasam Dam is actually two dams.  One is the Upper dam Karaiyar Dam and the other is the Lower Dam Papanasam Dam.  The Papanasam Dam is mainly supplied with water from the Tamiraparani River and Agasthiyar falls.  There is also a way for water to flow from one dam to another.

Measurements of Papanasam dam :

  • The total length of the dam is 227 meters.
  • The total height of the dam is 200 feet.
  • Can hold water up to 143 feet.
  • The total capacity of the dam is 5500 million cubic feet.
The dam stores water from the Tamiraparani River that flows through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi and supplies year-round drinking water to the districts of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, and Tenkasi.  This dam also irrigates about 86 thousand acres of land.

Funnel Mining Station

Most dams usually have a funnel mining station.  This is because the height of the dams is so high that when water falls from a height there, the turbine at the bottom can be easily rotated to easily generate electricity.  Since the height of the Papanasam Dam is 143 feet, it is possible to spin the turbine faster as water flows from that height and generates more electricity.

The funnel power plant at Papanasam can generate 28 MW of electricity.  It consists of four Francis turbine generators.  The first unit is July 1944, the second unit is December 1944, the third unit is June 1945 and the last unit is July 1951 implemented by Tamilnadu Govt.  It is currently operated by the Tamil Nadu Manufacturing and Distribution Corporation.  Has been a minor contributor to power generation in Tamil Nadu for over 75 years.
