TV Sundaram Iyengar biography - The Great Industrialist from Tirunelveli

        In the first decade of the twentieth century, a motorcycle was very popular all over India.  That's the TVS champ (TVS 50).  This motorcycle would have been in the home of almost all Indians at least once.  That much of units of the motorcycle was sold in India.  TVS is the company that planted the seeds for motorcycles in India.  TV Sundaram Iyengar is the founder of TVS, one of the three largest motorcycle companies in India with total assets of over Rs 20,000 crore.

TV Sundaram Iyengar

        TV Sundaram Iyengar is a lawyer, successful Indian businessman, and pioneer of the automobile company.  TV Sundaram Iyengar was a great man who lived with virtues like honesty, discipline, diligence, and some principles that belonged to him.  He started as a lawyer and became the owner of a bus transport company and later did a magnificent job in Automobile Industry.  It is a matter of great pride for Tirunelveli that such a talented businessman is a native of Tirunelveli.

Early Life

        TV Sundaram Iyengar was born on March 22, 1877, into a middle-class family in the village of Thirukurungudi near Nanguneri in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.  There is no information about his parents.  From his name, it is possible to know that their parents were of Iyengar descent.  He finishes his schooling at a nearby government school.

        TV Sundaram Iyengar, who is interested in studying law, has completed his schooling and is studying at the Law College in Tirunelveli.  After graduation, he began his career as a lawyer.  After working as a lawyer for a while, he was asked by his father to join the government service, and for that, he wrote the exam for Govt job.  He passed the exam and joined a job in the Central Railway Department.  He worked in the railway sector for a while.

As an Industrialist

        TV Sundaram Iyengar, who has worked as a lawyer and in government service, is making the biggest decision of his life.  He quit his government job and started his own business.  He started a transportation business and later turned it into a vehicle manufacturing company.

Bus Transport Business

        He started his first business bus service in Madurai in 1911.  Through his hard work and perseverance, he started TV Sundaram Iyengar & Sons Group of Company.  Sundaram Iyengar was very impressed by the depot vehicle passing itself fast loading trees.  In 1912, TV Sundaram Iyengar started the first passenger bus service in India.  The first bus service was between Madurai and Devakottai

        He imported two buses that were very fast and could carry a large number of passengers.  Those two buses are Dennis and Commer fitted with a chain-drive that should be refitting and has a top speed of 24km/hr.  A journey of 64 miles costs four rupees but the food is provided for free.  At that time there was no need to get any permission from the Transport Board or the Central Road Board to operate the bus service even if the permission was obtained from the local police.

        Within a year that he started bus transportation, bus travel became very popular among the people.  Thus many businessmen started this bus service.  Thus the fee was greatly reduced.  TVS then switched its bus service between Pudukottai and Thanjavur.

Automobile Industry

        Around 1916 TV Sundaram Iyengar started importing and selling Firestone tires and Ford and Crawford parts.  Then in 1923, TV Sundaram Iyengar & Sons(TVS) were founded.  After founding the company, the TVS Group of Companies began manufacturing motorcycles.  In 1929 it acquired a dealership selling motor directly to South Indian areas such as Madurai, Tirunelveli, Ramnadu, and Pudukkottai.  Despite the sluggish sales of motorcycles in the 1950s, TVS made good profits.  The most important reason for this is their quality of products.

Marriage Life

        TV Sundaram Iyengar, who has achieved great things in his career as an entrepreneur, has lived a wonderful life in his own life.  TV Sundaram Iyengar married Lakshmi Ammal and had five sons and three daughters, a total of eight children.  The eldest of his five sons dies at an early age. The remaining four sons started engaging in the family business before finishing their schooling.  And one of his daughters was involved in freedom and gained immense pride for her family.  TV Sundaram Iyengar, who made many achievements in his life, passed away on April 28, 1955, at the age of seventy-eight.

TVS Gas Plant

        During World War II, Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu, experienced severe gas shortages.  To address this the TV Sundaram Iyengar's son TS Krishna started the TVS Gas Plant Company.  TVS About 12,000 units of gas were produced and sold during that period.  To overcome the rubber shortage, he started a factory rubber retreading in pudhukottai.
