Amaravathi Dam is located in the city of Amaravathinagar in the Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu. It is located exactly 25 km south of Udumalaipettai on SH17 at the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary in Tirupur district. Since the dam is built across the river Amaravathi, This river is the main source of water for the Amaravathi Dam. There are many benefits to using this dam. But it was built specifically for irrigation and to control flooding.
Amaravathi River
The Amaravathi River flows through the town of Amaravathinagar in the Tirupur district. It originates in the Manjampatti Valley between the Annamalai Hills and the Palani Hills near the National Park and the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. The 282 km long Amaravathi River originates at the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border and flows northwards through the Amaravathi Reservoir and the Amaravathi Dam at Amaravathinagar.
Amaravathi Dam
Built in the middle of the river Amaravathi, the dam in Tirupur is with a large amount of water. The Amravati Dam reservoir is 33.5 by 3 meters in area and about 110 feet deep. There is also a funnel power station that can generate electricity from water. The dam currently generates 4 MW of electricity. Mug crocodiles are also found in large numbers in the reservoirs and catchment areas, attracting the attention of tourists.
The Amravati Dam was built in 1957, about 25 km south of the Thirumurthy Dam. The dam initially had a capacity of 4 tmcft but was reduced to 3 tmcft due to sedimentation. The dam is the only source of irrigation water for villages like Amravati Nagar and Udumalaipettai.

Fishing
In the 1950s, a species of fish called tilapia was introduced here in the reservoir of the Amravati Dam. Twenty years later, in the 1970s, the reservoir became the largest fish farm in the state. A fisherman can catch up to 20 kg of fish a day from this reservoir. The state government expects a fish production of 110 tonnes per annum from this site.
Tourism
The Amaravathi dam attracts more tourists than any other dam due to its crocodile farm and park. And also Amaravathi Dam is located in the middle of the hills so you can enjoy the trees, plants, and landscapes. There is also an Army school. There you can see the vehicles like Battle tanks, Army trucks used in the navy.

Farm and Park
The Government of Tamil Nadu has built a park near Amaravathi dam to easily enjoy the scenery. On the steps of the park, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Anaimalai Hills to the south of the lake and the Palani Hills. Especially at sunset in the evening, you can enjoy the sunset with the whole village view.
The crocodile farm there is home to a large number of unique crocodile species. To go to that farm you have to pay a fee of twenty rupees per person. Also if you use cameras you will have to pay a fee of up to Rs 100. Both the park and the crocodile farm are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
