Kalvarayan Hills - Kallakurichi District, The Adventurous Peek for Trekkers

       Tamilnadu is a delightful tourist place with its scenic mountains.  Tamil Nadu has always been one of the fascinators destinations on the map of the tourist of the world.  To add to it, Kalvarayan Hills, located in the Eastern Ghats, is beautifully situated.  It is exactly located in the Kallakurichi district.  Kalvarayan Hills, also known as Kalrayan Hills, is a mountain range located in the Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu.

        The Kalvarayan hills start in the Salem district and spread through the northeast and are located in many parts of Tamil Nadu.  The mountain covers an area of about 1000 square kilometers and is 2,000 to 3,000 feet high.  The Kalvarayan hill is divided into two parts, the northern part is called Chinna Kalvarayan and the southern part is called Periya Kalvarayan.

Geography of Kalvarayn Hills - It is a beautiful thing that the Kalvarayan Hills are a natural border to the districts of Salem and Kallakurichi.  The entire hill is surrounded by plants and trees.  Shrubs are found here at an altitude of 400 m and there are also deciduous forests that can be seen from a height of over 800 m.  Apart from the forest vegetation, there are also waterfalls here. It is estimated that there are a total of 10 waterfalls on this hill.  The Cauvery River is the mother of the forests that grow on this hill. Green Hill, Green Hill, Alawai Hill, Javadi, and Sevarai Hills separate the Cauvery River from the north to the south of the Palaru.

Climate - The climate here is cool as the waterfall is high. The average temperature is 23 degrees Celsius, the maximum is 27 degrees Celsius and the minimum is 19 degrees Celsius.

        The main reason why tourists come here is because of the waterfalls.  With a height of 4000 feet and dense jungle, Kalvarayan Hills is a challenge for mountaineers. Gives a terrifying experience.


Places to Visit Kalvarayn Hills

Venkataramana Temple - Kalvarayan Hill is a sacred place located in the foothills of the forest. The Venkatramana Hindu Temple was built in the year 1540 by Muthialu Nayak. What is special about this temple is that there are many inscriptions engraved in Tamil.  The pillars in these temples were made and decorated by the French rulers. It is not only a holy place but also a beautiful place that attracts the eye.

Manimukthanadhi Dam - Water travels out of Kalvarayan Hills.  Many dams have been built nearby to store them.  One of them is the Manimukthanadi Dam.  It is located near Kallakurichi. The total height of the dam is about 20 feet. It was built in 1970 on the banks of the Manimukta River.  The dam supplies water to Villupuram and Cuddalore districts.  During the monsoons, the dam overflows and looks very beautiful.  So those who come to Kalvarayan Hill will come here and enjoy it.

Other Dams - Gomukhi Dam is located at a distance of 15 km from Kallakurichi.  The dam supplies water to two districts, Kallakurichi and Villupuram.  Apart from the two dams mentioned above, the Pappanayakkanpatti Dam is the largest dam in the Kalwarayanmalai area. The total height of the dam is about 52 feet. The dam is full of water and gives a different feel to its beauty. The presence of water in this dam every year is significant.

Kalvarayan Hills Falls - There are two beautiful waterfalls near Kalvarayan Hills.  The first one is Periyar Falls, which is situated near vellimalai village.  This waterfall falls only during the monsoon season. The waterfall is beautifully located between the valleys. During the monsoon season, the water that falls from the excess waterfall is found to be stagnant like a pond. In it, you can bathe and play.
        The second one is Megam Falls, which is located near Kachirayapalayam.  This waterfall is just as dependent on the monsoon as the Periyar Falls. Excess waterfalls only during the monsoon season. Although the water in this waterfall does not stay like a pool, you can hike here. The environment here will calm and refresh your mind. The herb here is said to cure the disease in your body.

  • Kallakurichi and Villupuram are two cities located very close to Kalvarayan Hills.  If you want to reach Kalvarayan Hills you must first reach one of the cities of Villupuram or Kallakurichi.  From there you can easily reach Kalvarayan Hills by bus or taxi.
