Bhavani Sagar Dam is located across the Bhavani River in the Erode District. It is one of the biggest earthen dams in India and around the world. And it is the second-largest dam in Tamilnadu. The dam was built in 1956 during the rule of Kamaraj in Tamil Nadu. The dam receives water from the Bhavani River and the Moir River. The water is released from this dam into the lower Bhavani canal. The water from this dam is used to irrigate the fields in Tamilnadu. And I should mention that there is a hydropower station here.
Construction - This is the first dam and irrigation project built after India's independence. The Bhavani Shankar project was implemented on an area of 80000 hectares covering an area of 197600 acres. The dam was built not only for irrigation but also to prevent flooding and generate electricity. There are two hydropower stations here that produce almost 32MW throughout the year. The capacity of each unit is 16 MW. It also helps to prevent flooding in the Bhavani River and to control sedimentation in the downstream river.

The Bhavani River, the main source of the Bhavani Sagar Dam, originates in the Nilgiris of the Western Ghats. It enters the Silent Valley Park in Kerala and then flows back towards Tamil Nadu. Its area is 87% in Tamil Nadu, 9% in Kerala, and 4% in Karnataka. It is built across the Bhavanisagar Dam on the way to Erode. It is noteworthy that 90% of this water is used for agriculture.
