Then Telugu Ganga Project was contracted on 18 April 1983 by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of Andhra Pradesh to carry that water through the Somaseela and Kandaleru reservoirs.
The project was completed in 1996 after 13 years. This 15 million cubic feet of water travels 152 km from Kandaleru Reservoir to reach Boondi Reservoir. Water is then channeled from the Boondi Reservoir to Redhills and Sembarambakkam Lake via a long canal. From there it is purified and supplied to the Corporation of Chennai.
