Berijam Lake in Kodaikanal - Pleasing Lake, Stay, Timing, How to Reach

         Berijim is a beautiful lake located in the Dindigul district of Tamilnadu.  It is exactly located on the site of "Fort Hamilton" in the Upper Palani Hills.  And it is 23 Km away from Kodaikanal.  It is a pleasing lake that gives refreshment to your body as well as to your soul.  The water from this lake is stored in a dam which is very close to the city of Kodaikanal.  This lake is one of the important tourist attractions in Kodaikanal.  But the beautiful Berijam lake was once a swamp in the 1800s and not many people know it was artificially built.

History

        Berijam Lake was a swamp in the 1800s.  But in this place, there was naturally the largest lake and over time it turned into a swamp.  The Berijam Swamp was first known and recorded in 1864 by Colonel Douglas Hamilton, a soldier in the 21st Regiment of the Madras Native Infantry.  After the discovery of this swamp, they searched for the historical record about it, not even a small story was found. In 1906, 40 years later, they began to explore the swamp.  Examination of the traces and soil conditions found along the coast revealed that there was a lake about 5 miles long, 3960 feet wide, and 20 feet deep.  Over time it has become a swamp.

Berijim Lake
        When Colonel Hamilton submitted a report on this in 1864, English forces believed that the site would be suitable for a cantonment or sanatorium on Palani Hills.  Then a military police station was built here based on that belief. It was named Ford Hamilton.  The Berijim dam construction work has started here in 1867.  For that Berijim Dam construction, former Madurai Collector Sir Vere Levigne donated a portion of his stipend.  But with his stipend, Berijim lake was built artificially.


Britisher's Transit Camp - There is a 100-year-old two-story building very close to Lake Berijam.  That building was the British Transit Camp.  In that building, which had been in disrepair for many years, only the British camp was visible in brightly yellow.  The building is one of the many camps built for soldiers to relax while traveling on the "British Escape Route" 230 km from Kodaikanal to Kochi via Top Station and Munnar.  These camps were built during the Second World War and many of the camps built in Tamil Nadu today are in ruins.

Guna Caves - These caves were built during British rule by the British officer P.S. Ward found.  Researchers say the caves may have been built before the 18th century. There is also evidence that it dates back to 1821.  Guna Caves began to grow as an important tourist destination in Kodaikanal in the 1990s.  This cave is located in the hilly region of Kodaikanal and offers a unique experience. Tourists visiting Kodaikanal are 'recommended' to visit this cave.  Many parts of the Tamil movie Guna were shot in this Guna cave.  Hence it got the name Guna Caves.

Pillar Rocks - The single rock at 400 feet amazes everyone who sees it.  The pleasing Pillar Rocks is one of the beautiful spots in Kodaikanal.  These rocks are located on the top of the mountain so they are surrounded by clouds and fog and the bottom of the rock is surrounded by vegetation.

Fishing in Berijam Lake - The beautiful Berijam Lake is home to a wide variety of fish species.  You can fishing here and it is customary for all the tourists who come here to go fishing.  In some places, you have to pay an entrance fee for fishing.

Golf Club - The first thing that comes to mind is the nature of Kodaikanal. But one thing many people do not know is the golf club there.  The golf club here has over a hundred years of tradition and history. Located exactly 16 kilometers from Lake Berijam.  Tourists are allowed to come and play in this club. Located in a very natural environment, this club is a wonderful place to do golf.

Trekking - Trekking is one of the best adventure activities in Kodaikanal, which is known for its mountains and caves. The Pambar Falls trek is one of the most refreshing. The beautiful waterfall, the sound of birds, the vegetation, and the cool area all add up to a lot of fun while hiking.

Flora and Fauna

        This Berijam Lake is surrounded by herbaceous flora and fauna.  Very rare species and high herbaceous plants are grown here.  The Government of Tamil Nadu's first field-based environmental education center is located here.  It is maintained by the Forest Department in Kodaikanal. It is a unique medical garden. The garden is spread over an area of ​​2.5 acres. A variety of plants for students' education, and a rare species of free-floating insectivorous urinary plant called Utricularia australis, also known as swamp surveillance area, are grown here.
