Kodaikanal was upgraded by American Christian missionaries and British authorities after British rule in 1845. Then in the twentieth century, some Indians started settling in Kodaikanal.
Kodaikanal was a bit difficult to reach as the whole of Kodaikanal was hilly. To facilitate this, a railway line was laid between Kodaikanal and Cuddalore in 1922, making it the first route to Kodaikanal. But this railroad has been going through many problems for almost 30 years. In 1889 consideration was given to the construction of the railway line. But it was postponed to 1922 due to two major reasons: the Periyar Dam and World War I.
