Shiv Nadar is one of India's billionaires. He is the founder of HCL, one of the largest IT companies known worldwide today. Shiv Nadar has been involved in the IT industry for over 25 years and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2008 in recognition of his service to the IT industry. He is also the founder of the Nadar Foundation, India's largest charity. He has raised the standard of education in India through this charity. It is an honor for Tirunelveli to have such a great man home to Tirunelveli.
Birth and Early Life
Shiv Nadar was born in the village of Moolaipozhi, ten kilometers from Thiruchendur in the present-day Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. The village which was in Tirunelveli district when Shiv Nadar was born was later divided into Thoothukudi district. So Shiv Nadar belongs to Tirunelveli. Shiv Nadar was born on July 14, 1945, the son of Sivasubramaniam Nadar and Sundari Devi. His mother Vamasundari Devi is the sister of Dinathandi founder SP Adithyanar.
Shiv Nadar did his primary schooling at the Town School in Kumbakonam. He then joined Elango Corporation High School in Madurai District and St. Joseph's Boys' High School in Trichy and completed his high school education. He then received a pre-University degree from the American College, Madurai, and graduated from the PNG College of Technology, Coimbatore with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Career
After completing his college education, Shiv Nadar joined the Walchand Group's Cooper Engineering Limited in Pune in 1967. Shortly afterward he worked with his teammates on the marketing team at the Cloth Mill in Delhi. He then quit that job and started his own business with his friends not to work for others.
Shiv Nadar started Microcomp Limited company as a joint venture with his friends Ajay Chaudhary (former President, HCL), Arjun Malhotra (CEO and Chairman, Headstrong), Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap, and DS Puri. Through this company, they sold tele digital calculators in India. The company gave the expected profit without any loss.
Hindustan Computers Limited(HCL)
August 11, 1976, Microcomp Limited was renamed Hindustan Computers Limited. The company set up its headquarters on the land provided by the State of Uttar Pradesh. In addition, the initial capital of 187000 rupees was raised by the founding committee for this company. The company also manufactured and sold microprocessors following calculators.
HCL has been selling computers, microprocessors, and other IT hardware in Singapore since 1980 and has entered the international market. In the first financial year of its entry into the international market, it earned over Rs. 10 lakhs.
Although HCL is a small company, its growth has been large since 1977. The most important reason for this is that after Jorge Fernandez became the Minister of Industry in 1977, he was a major obstacle to the growth of many international companies such as IBM and Coca-Cola in India. But on the other hand, he created a huge market to sell HCL's products in India.
In 1983, HCL manufactured and marketed a 16-bit microprocessor in India. Not only this, with the coming of the year the database management system and client-server architecture were developed. In 1984, HCL introduced the personal compute Busybee running on the UNIX platform in India.
In 1991, HCL co-founded HCL HP with Hewlett Packard. It then formed a partnership with Nokia and Ericsson in 1994 to sell cell phones and mobile switches in India.
Arjun Malhotra, the co-founder of HCL, left the company in 1998. Thus HCL lost one of its largest shareholders. To counter this, in 1999 Shiv Nadar listed HCL on the Indian Stock Exchange. From 2000 to 2006, Shiv Nadar made several attempts to transform HCL into a large multinational corporation. He has partnered with several companies and bought several companies and merged with HCL.
