History of Thoothukudi - The Pearl City and History of Tuticorin Ports

        Thoothukudi(Tuticorin) is a district in southern Tamil Nadu, India. It is a port city and an ideal city for doing business. It specializes in education, trade, nature, etc. and another special feature is the port here. Thoothukudi district has a long history dating back to the time of the Muvendars who ruled Tamil Nadu. Thoothukudi is the birthplace of many celebrities like Mahakavi Bharathi, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, and Shiv Nadar. Today Thoothukudi is a separate district but in the past, it was a part of the Tirunelveli district.

History of Thoothukudi

        The history of Thoothukudi dates back to the 7th century. Thoothukudi did not become a major city until the 7th century as it did not play a major role in the rule of the early Cheras. Thoothukudi became an important city after the rule of the Pandyas in the 7th century. It was ruled by the Pandyan kings from the 7th to the 9th century. The medieval Cholas ruled in Tamil Nadu after the fall of the Pandya kings. Thoothukudi district was then ruled by the medieval Cholas from the 9th century to the 12th century.

Portuguese and Dutch rule

        Thoothukudi later became an ideal port for trade and seafaring.  In 1532, the Portuguese first arrived at the port of Thoothukudi.  After the rule of the Muvendars, the rule of the Portuguese began to take hold all over India.  During this period trade between the Portuguese country and India took place through the port of Thoothukudi.

        Dutch rule appeared in India after the fall of the Portuguese. India was ruled by the Dutch in the 1700s. Trade between the Netherlands and India then took place through the port of Thoothukudi.

British Rule

        In 1782 AD, the British completely conquered India from the Dutch.  Thoothukudi was then ruled by the British for over 200 years.  This period can be considered the golden age of Thoothukudi.  This is because Thoothukudi grew tremendously during British rule.  During their rule, many educational institutions, trains, railways, and ports were built in Thoothukudi.

Separation from Tirunelveli

        Thoothukudi was never a district during the rule of the Portuguese and Dutch. It was a part of Tirunelveli during British rule. However, after India's independence, Thoothukudi was divided into a separate district.  Thoothukudi was separated from Tirunelveli district on October 20, 1986, and became the 38th district of Tamil Nadu.  In the early days when the Thoothukudi district was formed, it was named after the first Tamil sailor, V. O. Chidambaranar.  The district has been known as Thoothukudi since 1997 as its capital.

The first Indian Shipping Company

        Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, India's first shipping company in India It was started by Chidambaram in Thoothukudi.  With an investment of ten lakhs, the company imported two ships from abroad.  The company was created by an Indian day to suppress the atrocities committed the British shipping.  The company sent its first steamship, the SS Goliath, to Sri Lanka from Thoothukudi on June 1, 1907.  But the company was soon shut down by British repression.

Pearl City

        Thoothukudi district is also known as the "Pearl City" and the "Sea Gateway" of Tamil Nadu.  Near present-day Thoothukudi there was an ancient city called Korkai.  The city has been in the pearl fishing and shipbuilding industry for over two thousand years.  Once it was a very important place for trade and pearl farming.  The city of Korkai is considered to be the center of pearl fishing, which describes the trade relations between Alexandria and India in the eastern part of the Roman Empire.

Port City

        The world's oldest port and the main port of Thoothukudi, the Pearl Diving Harbor, has been around for almost 500 years.  The port was built during the reign of the Pandyas.  It was then captured by the Portuguese in 1542.  Then it was captured by the Dutch in 1658.  Then in 1825, it was under the British for 200 years after the rule of the British.

Politics

        Thoothukudi was first considered a city in the 7th century AD and then gradually grew and many centuries later Thoothukudi gained special status as a district.  It is not only an ordinary district but also a very important city in the shipping industry of Tamil Nadu.  After 142 years as a municipality in Tamil Nadu, it became a corporation on August 5, 2008.  In 2011 Thoothukudi was expanded into 60 wards and divided into four zones namely East, West, North, South.
