Kalakad - Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Thalayanai dam

         Kalakad(Kalakadu) is a municipality in the Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.  It is one of the three municipalities in the Tirunelveli district.  Kalakad Municipality is famous for the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.  Not only this but there is also the Thalayani river and the Thalayanai dam. Kalakad is one of the best tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu with its dams, sanctuaries, and rivers.  Many people have forgotten the history of this town as it is currently a popular tourist destination.  It has a long history.

History

        Kalakad(Kalakadu) has played a major role in the history of Travancore since its inception.  Kalakad has been a part of the rulers of Travancore.  In this place, some wars took place between the kings of Travancore and the British.  Notably, Jonas de Lanoy, the only son of Eustace de Lanoy, died on 14 September 1765 at the age of 20 against the King of Travancore.

        Prior to this war, there were frequent struggles and changes of hands during the Pulithevar-led Balinese uprising of the 1750s.  It is noteworthy that in ancient history it was the capital of the Pandyan kings during the reign of the Pandya dynasty.

The geography of Kalakad

        Kalakad is rich in forests, mountains, and rivers, to the extent of setting up a tiger sanctuary.  It is surrounded on three sides by the Western Ghats.  Kalakkadu-Mundanthurai is a tiger reserve and is home to a number of endangered species such as the lion-tailed macaque.  Rare types of herbs are grown here as the village is full of forests and mountains.

        Currently, in this forest, a small dam called Vadakku Pachayar Dam was built by the Government of Tamil Nadu.  It is built in the middle of the Pachayar river.  This northern Pachaiyaru river is a tributary of the Tamiraparani river.  Due to its proximity to the Western Ghats, Kalakad always experiences a mild temperature, ie cold.

Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

        The Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve was established in 1988 by combining Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary.  Both were established in 1962.  It is located about 45 km west of Tirunelveli.  The reserve also has formed the area for 14 rivers and many streams.  The reserve contains some important rivers such as the Tamiraparani, Ramanathi, Karaiyaru, Chervalaru, and Manimuttaru.  These rivers play an important role in the water demand of many towns and villages.

        In addition to tigers, there are more than 150 native plants, 33 species of fish, 37 species of waterfalls, 81 species of reptiles, 273 species of birds, and 27 species of mammals living in Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.  The Government of Tamil Nadu has made many facilities for the maintenance of the living creatures here.  Electricity and Maintenance work for the quarter stayed at a number of employees are working here three shoes.  The workers also work on the Karaiyar, Mel Dam, Chervalaru, and Appar Kodaiyaru reservoirs which are under protection.

Tourist Information

        To visit the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, you have to get permission from the forest department.  But no permission is required to look visit the Pachayar dam and mountains there.  Although there is no water in the Tamiraparani river, there is water in the Pachaiyaru and the dam.  Due to this many people come here in summer and bathe and enjoy the moments.
