The reign of Kamaraj, popularly known as Kingmaker and Karmaveer, is still hailed by the people as the golden age of Tamil Nadu. During his tenure, Kamaraj was the one who built many dams for water storage, many hydropower plants for electricity, and schools for the development of Tamil Nadu. Many factories developed at lightning speed, such as the leather factory, the garment factory, and the automobile factory. Tamil Nadu was in its dream years under his rule.
At a time when Kamaraj, who has won two consecutive elections and become the Chief Minister, thinks that he will win for the third time after doing so many good things, Anna defeated Kamaraj and become chief minister of TamilNadu. This would be an incredibly shocking thing for many. Anna had a mastermind strategy in defeating Kamaraj, who was very influential among the people, in the 1967 elections.
The Root Cause
In 1957 Kamaraj became the chief minister of Tamilnadu first time. Kamaraj won the subsequent assembly elections and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the second time. For the third time, Kamaraj's party, the Congress, won the assembly elections, but this time it was not Kamaraj but Bhagwatsalam who came to power. There was also a reason why Kamaraj did not accept the post of Chief Minister. The decline of the Congress party began on a massive scale in India. Thus Kamaraj came up with a plan called the k-plan.
The K-Plan - Kamaraj's plan is for all senior leaders in the Congress party to step down and start to do the job for the party. He hoped that this would further enhance the quality of the party and overcome the party's decline. According to this plan, although Congress won the assembly elections Kamaraj focused on party work instead of becoming chief minister.
Hindi Stuffing
When Kamaraj was not in power, his successors wanted to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu. This is the second root cause. This Hindi dumping took place while Omanthur Ramasamy Reddiar was in power. But due to many strikes, it was abandoned as it was. Bhaktavatsalam who came to power in 1963, tried to impose India, which provoked a great struggle among the students.
Attack on students - Lal Bahadur Shastri and Moralji Desai sent the Indian Army, outposts, and the CRPF to Tamil Nadu to launch a vicious attack on protesters. All the protesters were youths and students. Many Tamil Nadu youths were killed in this strike and the whole of Tamil Nadu began to flow with the blood of the youth. Nealy 500 students died in this violence.
Even Congress leaders like Kamaraj and C Subramaniam opposed the Hindi dump. The hatred against Bhaktavatsalam was increasing day by day among the people of Tamil Nadu. Over the course of the day that hatred turned into hatred against the Congress and the people began to hate the Congress party and began to exclude the party as a whole.
DMK Entrance
Many parties across Tamil Nadu have been protesting against the dumping of Hindi, especially the DMK. Noticing this, people began to trust the DMK. Leaders like Annathurai and Karunanidhi praised the struggle against Hindi dumping and thus increased the value of DMK among the people. On the other hand, The Congress party began to lose the influence of the people.
The DMK's master plan for the 1967 elections - In 1964 there was a sporadic food shortage in Tamil Nadu. To this, the DMK promised that if we came to power we would give three steps of rice for one rupee. This election promise made the people of Tamil Nadu think. In the 1967 elections, the Congress contested alone but the DMK formed a very strong alliance. The DMK alliance included Rajaji's Freedom Party, the Marxist Communist Party, the Muslim League Party, and some independent parties. Although the DMK has formed alliances with many parties and is strong, there is still a huge leader in the Congress party named Kamaraj. This alliance alone is not enough to defeat the Congress party. Then the game changer comes in.
The Hero MGR Comes In
Many hatreds, as distrust as the Congress party to be weak. On the other hand, there was the DMK party as the new hope, the strongest alliance. Both parties were equal. At present both parties need only one additional advantage over who wins. MGR, the man who has just won the hearts of the laity of Tamil Nadu, is entering the field. "MGR is a gooseberry that has been ripening for a thousand years, It fell on my lap and I took it and put it in my heart" Annathurai said of the importance of MGR.
Firing on MGR - MGR joined with the DMK. MR Radha, who came to meet MGR in 1967 shortly before the election, shot MGR. But MGR survived that shot and was admitted to the hospital. Karunanidhi, one of the best writers in the world, wrote an article in Murasoli about this. That article changed the mindset of the people of Tamil Nadu as a whole. In that article he said, "Revolutionary actor survived. Shooter MR Radha, victim MGR. Shooter Periyar's sword, victim Anna's lovely brother. The focal point of the problem is Kamaraj".
They took a photo of MGR being treated at the hospital and released it. MGR fans who saw this were outraged and sad. This created a huge wave of sympathy across Tamil Nadu as all the MGR fans supported the DMK. The result was the DMK's big victory in the election. Many years of Congress rule came to an end. Kamaraj lost the constituency in which he contested. For the first time, the people of Tamil Nadu have proved that Tamil Nadu is not dependent on just one party.
