Veeranam Lake in Cuddalore - Major Water Supplier of Chennai, The Story Behind Lake

History of Veeranam Lake

To this generation, Veeranam Lake may be a normal tourist destination or an important lake that supplies water to Chennai.  But this lake has one great pride that is it was built artificially.  The pride is the largest artificial lake in Tamilnadu.  Also, this lake was built about 1000 years ago.

Veeranam Lake stretches from Lalpettai to Chettiar Thoppu in the Cuddalore district.  Its total length is 16 km.  It was built in the 10th century by a Chola king named Rajaditya Chola, the son of Paranthaka Chola.  The lake was built and completed in 45 years from 907 to 955.  But the interesting fact is that this lake was not built on purpose. This is an accidental discovery of the Cholas.

Rajaditya Cholan was marching through Cuddalore district with his troops for the Takkolam war.  Then the soldiers and horses rested in the Lalpet area to rest.  Chola then looked at the area and hoped that there, he could cut a lake with the soldiers he had.  Cutting Veeranam Lake can prevent river water from mixing with the sea in vain.  It can be used for agriculture.  The cut was completed 48 years after the cut began.

The Chola dynasty cut the 16 km long lake a thousand years ago with bare hands and a shovel without any existing automobile engines.  The lake still plays an important role in Tamil Nadu.

Water Supplier of Chennai

As already mentioned above Veeranam Lake is the most important water supplier in Chennai.  The project began during the CN Annadurai period, a thousand years after the lake was created.  After this, the project started to be built under Karunanidhi's rule.  The project came to an end five years later during Jayalalithaa's tenure.  But this project disappointed all.  It was not possible to take the expected amount of water from the lake and give it to Chennai.  And the lake began to dry up.  Thus the Tamil Nadu government started digging about 45 deep wells in the lake and sending the water from it to Chennai through a pipeline.
