Krishnagiri Dam - Built Across Ponnaiyar River in Kamaraj Period

Ponnaiyar River

This river Tenpennai or Ponnaiyar originates in the Nandi Hills of Chikkaballapura district in the state of Karnataka and flows through Tamil Nadu and joins the Bay of Bengal.  It flows 497 km through major cities like Bangalore, Hosur, Thiruvannamalai, and Cuddalore.  Many dams have been built on this river. The largest dam is the Sathanur Dam with a total capacity of 7.3 TMCFT.  It is built in the Thiruvannamalai district.  The Government of Tamil Nadu has also constructed a Krishnagiri dam in the Krishnagiri district on the way to reach the Bay of Bengal via Tamil Nadu.

It is bordered by business cities such as Hosur, Santapuram, Anaikkal, and Chengam.  Those cities contain huge and important factories.  And the waste that comes from those companies is mixed with this river and becomes polluted.  The river dries up mostly in summer. So the dams that get water from it will also dry up. In Tamil Nadu, the river flows only during the southwest monsoon and water is available to the dams. At that time it is used for the surrounding villages, for irrigation, and for drinking water.

Construction of Dam

The project, called KRP, was started in 1955.  Then in 1958, the construction of the dam was completed.  Kamaraj was then the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu who inaugurated the dam in 1955.  The dam was built under a section(Command Area Development Authority) called CADA.  The dam cost 15.9 Million Rupees to build.  It is one of the finest dams built during the Kamaraj period.

Measurements of the dam
  • The total length of the Krishnagiri(KRP) dam is 990.59 m.
  • The height of the dam from the foundation is 29.26 m.
  • The total volume of the Krishnagiri dam is 509 TMC.
  • The level of the crest is 483.11 m.
  • The spillways are ogee type and the total capacity is 4061 cu. m.
  • Totally there are eight spillways and each gate size is 12.19 x 6.10 m.

The KRP Park

Krishnagiri Dam Park turns the KRP dam into a tourist place.  The park has a variety of play equipment suitable for boys and girls to play with.  The park is located very close to the Krishnagiri Dam. It was built by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department and is currently being maintained.  Especially here during the rainy season, you can go boating while the water is flowing in the river.  Boating costs between 70 and 160 rupees.  You can also do horseback riding here.
