One of the highlights of Tirunelveli is the dams. One of those dams is the Adavinainar Dam. Dams are a building built to store rainwater to prevent rainwater from mixing with the ocean. So all dams will be built across the river, near the foothills, or in flood-prone areas. Thus there will be more natural resources around the dam. Almost all the dams turn into tourist destinations as it is very beautiful to see. In this article, we're going to learn the history, beauty, and information about the Adavinainar dam.
Adavinainar Dam
Adavinainar Dam is located in Tenkasi District,(near Tirunelveli district) Chengottai Taluk, Achanputhur Municipality. The dam is located in a scenic area at the foothills of the Western Ghats. The Adavinainar Dam is built across the Anumantha River, so the primary source of water for the dam is from the Anumantha River.
History of Adavinainar Dam
There is a very important reason for the construction of the Adavinainar Dam and a somewhat tragic event. In 1992, an unprecedented amount of rain fell in the Tirunelveli district. It was raining heavily, especially in the Tenkasi circle. Heavy rains in Red Fort taluka caused extensive damage, landslides, and loss of life.
Following these consequences, the Tamil Nadu government decided to build a 132 feet high dam(Adavinainar Dam) across the Anumantha river on the Merkarari, Sengottai. Many villages in Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts benefit from the Adavinainar dam. Water is released directly from this dam for agriculture, especially to Panpozhi, Vadakara, Achanputhur, Vavanagaram, Idaikal, Aikkudi, and Sundara Pandiyapuram. Not only this but many more villages are also benefiting from the Adavinainar Dam.
Construction of Adavinainar Dam
The Tamil Nadu government decided to build the dam in 1992 and started work on it in 1994. It bought several acres of land near the Sengottai and completed the construction of the Adavinainar Dam in 2002. Then in 2003, the Adavinainar dam was opened.
