Aliyar Dam Info

Aliyar Dam is located across the river(aliyar river) that flows through the town of Aliyar.  The Aliyar Dam was built across the river from 1959 to 1969 to prevent flooding and wastage due to the high water level in the aliyar river.  The dam was inaugurated on October 2, 1962, by the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.  It is noteworthy that this dam was built during the Kamaraj period.

Hydel Power Plant

The special thing about the Aliyar dam is that a water power station is installed here.  This type of power plant is rarely installed in dams in Tamil Nadu.  For this power generation the water of Parambikulam, Azhiyaru Choliyar, Thunakadavu, Thekkady, and Palaru rivers flow from different heights for power generation.  Water from these streams is fed through interconnected dams through tunnels and canals to the power plant.

Aliyar River

The river Kannadipuzha flows through Kerala.  The Aliyar River is a tributary of the Kannadipuzha River.  The Kannadipuzha River is one of the major tributaries of the Bharathapuzha River, the second-longest river in Kerala.  One of the sources of this Bharatipuzha river is the water coming from the Azhiyar dam.  Water is supplied to Aliyaru Lake through the Hydroelectric Power Station at Aliyaru Reservoir and the Parambikulam Reservoir through the Contour Canal.

Fishing

The water reservoir at Aliyar Dam was surveyed by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute for almost 11 years from 1982 to 1992.  The conclusion of this study is that the rate of conversion of energy at the primary producer level and fish production level is higher than that of water in dams in other parts of India.  The water reservoir at Aliyar Dam has a total of 40 species belonging to 13 indigenous fish families and 7 reserve species.

Tourist Place

The place where Aliyar Dam is located is a very natural place.  Valparai village is very scenic and has a large number of monkeys.  The dam is surrounded by Annamalai hills in three directions.  Not only this, the presence of parks and fishing grounds near the dam also increases the number of tourists.  There are also boat rides available.
